I got iOS 11! ask me stuff you might want to know about it as i’m running the dev beta on my daily driver, which come to think about it might be a terrible idea.

What’s the biggest difference that you think makes it better?

using it on my phone, nothing makes it so much better that makes one “need” to update to iOS 11 from say 10 or 9 so far, but it definitely has some more nifty features, especially with the control center, where you can customize the control center, and you can now use screen recording. They’ve also added one hand keyboard as well. I think most of 11 was just a refresh. However, I think 11 makes the iPads much more handy and useful, and really work to differentiate it from being just a large iPhone, I think I’ll be updating my iPad to beta 2 once it comes out.

There’s literally nothing there yet unless you put something in there, which I haven’t gotten to do yet

Oh that’s a terrible layout. I ran the OSX 10.12 beta on my daily driver MacBook and regretted it.

If you’re regarding the control center, it is. There is just so much wasted space. But you can add an extra row on the bottom for extra shortcuts since you can now customize the control center.

Screen recording sounds pretty snazzy. What have they done to the iPad? I’ve got the iPad Pro 12 something.

yup, you can’t actually manage software files if that’s what you call them. Not even sure what you can do with the files system yet.

They’re essentially moving the iPad closer to a Mac. They’ve now implemented a more useful multitasking, a multitasking home dock similar to what you’d find in Mac OS and a files system. The app switcher also allows apps to be continuously running, like on Mac. IMO, this is a big step up for the iPad

well, you can save stuff such as PDFs to files now instead of having to use iBooks, so that seems useful

Android phones have file manager ability since... 2009 at least.

It’s about damn time you could add your own stuff to it. It’s not like they didn’t have the screen real estate. I haven’t picked up an iPhone in a while though.

That’s cool can you screenshot the one handed keyboard?

Seems very busy and un-Apple like but I’m interested to see how it changes from the betas to the GM release

yup, although it’s now slightly more complicated to get to night shift (apple’s version of f.lux) since you have to 3D touch into another menu to get there

I’m installing it on mine and my dad’s phones right now. I’m super excited. How has it been for you though? What are some of the big problems?

Those most-used features (wifi, Bluetooth, music playback, etc.) seem a little high on the screen for easy one-handed access. I’m a woman with small hands and an iPhone 6S and trying to reach those icons with my thumb would be a little uncomfortable and probably destabilize the grip I have on the phone. I imagine it would be worse on the larger 6/6S/7 plus phones.
What’s your take on it?

it’s alright. I feel like one of the places that is still incomplete is the app switcher, which is stuttery and won’t open with 3D touch. There’s also a bunch of other bugs as well, especially with regards to the lock screen. I also believe that the apps in the dock should not be missing text. Otherwise, it’s just slower

they are a bit far now that you mention it, but it isn’t too big of a stretch for me since I have large hands. However, the wifi and Bluetooth box can move even further up when you add additional shortcuts to control center. I do believe apple wasted a lot of useful space in the control center, but I do realize they were trying to make it as reachable as possible.

This will probably suck on my old iPhone 6 Plus, but usually these releases are some kind of indication that a new iPhone is coming...
I went to the Apple Store today and they cleaned out my lightning connector so my phone charges again, which is awesome, but the battery is dying, which is always the sign that my phone really needs to be replaced. Really looking forward to that...

yup, the new iPhones, possibly the iPhone 7S and 7S plus, as well as an iPhone edition to celebrate 10 years of the iPhone are slated to be revealed in September.

Are we sure it will be an S variant?
I need to dig around online and see what is expected...

they did give the 6 an S, maybe it’s just so similar that not many people notice the difference, but it’s there. what I’ve told you regarding reveals is mostly based on leaks, which is about 60-70 percent accurate from year to year at around this time, which is pretty impressive to say the least

I somehow forgot. How am I still running a three year old iPhone?! I usually upgrade every other year, this is the first time I haven’t.
I must have decided to try to stick it out so I could shift from the 3G->4->5->6 pattern. Usually those launches sell distinctly more phones than the S launches, plus the accessories are never there, so I end up running a while with nothing.
Now that I realize this, my phone is in amazing shape for having run that long without anything more than the leather case.

Me too, I bought a 6+ on release with an apple leather cover. My phone is still in physically excellent condition, though I think it’s very tired. It’s slow to do anything. Battery is ok though?

My battery is getting weak. It survives a full day, sometimes a bit longer, but it definitely isn’t as good as it once was. My old ones wouldn’t even make it a day for the last handful of months before I replaced them.
I haven’t noticed that distinct a slowdown on mine with updates like I remember experiencing with older versions, but I know that it can’t keep up with my typing (and it never really could, I just expect better). Not that it’s that bad - wait 0.5-1.5 seconds and it always catches up.
